Lead-Zinc in Southwest Missouri outside the Tri-State District Lead was first mined in Greene, Webster, and Christian counties in the 1850s. Most mining in southwest Missouri from the 1870s to the 1940s was in these three counties plus Taney, Ozark, Wright, Dade, Howell and Texas counties.
Prospectors were persistent, however, and in 1869, the Clifton (Gold Hill) district was organized. Small amounts of gold, silver, and lead were produced over the next few years. Mining activity and production increased in 1892, when a mill was constructed to treat the ores.

The Cole County Mining area was mined from 1830 to 1910, with lead as the principal product. After 1910, most of the mining was for barite, with galena (lead) as a minor by-product. By 1947, lead production in the Central Mining District (CMD) had totaled 24,855 short tons. Since 1950, no lead and very little barite have been mined.
